Please welcome Hierro by Kelly Ashfield. This design has been published in the latest edition of Pom Pom Quarterly - available in print and digital formats.
Many of you will know Kelly through Ravelry and her popular blog as CelticCastOn. She is originally from Ireland but now lives in Canada with husband and daughter. Kelly is an accomplished knitter and photographer and her Ravelry project pages provide lots of exquisite projects for us to feast our eyes upon and with which to be inspired. In her spare time she particularly enjoys knitting garments and occasionally socks or accessories for herself and her daughter. Kelly thinks that knitting provides her with the perfect way to unwind after a busy day whilst at the same time keeping her hands busy.
Kelly learnt to knit at school aged 6 - a compulsory subject during her early education, but she only really took up knitting as a serious pursuit in 2004 with the discovery of more luxurious yarns. She joined Ravelry in 2007 and discovered other indie designers through the forums. Kelly got involved with test knitting patterns for designers including Elena Nodel and says that seeing all their beautiful creations inspired her to create designs of her own.
Back to Hierro. Kelly tells us that the stitch pattern we see on Hierro is reminiscent of the wrought iron gates and fences she would see surrounding peoples homes when she was younger. Kelly chose Colour Adventures yarn for the design as she feels the rich, vibrant colorways and beautiful stitch definition will make the cables and bobbles pop! Another reason was that Colour Adventures yarns are available in a wide range of colorways and bases.
Are you interested in a KAL for Hierro? Kelly says she does not have plans for one at the moment but if there appeared to be enough demand would be happy to assist with one in the Pom-Pom Ravelry group.
Kelly tells us that she is delighted to see Hierro published and has plans for more designs in the future. She says that the flood gates have been opened and now she has "a waterfall of ideas."
